Elegant home tailored for a comfortable family fit
After waiting two years for lots to be released in the final phase of Aspen Woods Estates, Michele Hwang and Wilfred Chan are finally building the home of their dreams.
The couple moved to Calgary from Edmonton in 2017 and have been living in the northwest pending construction of a new home by premium custom builder, Homes by Us. Their 3,000-square-foot, three-bedroom home with a triple car garage is modelled after the builder’s two-storey Sequoia floor plan, although with all of their customizations, it bears little resemblance to the Homes by Us show home in Aspen.
“Our home is not exactly the same. It’s a bit smaller than the show home,” says Hwang, who chose Homes by Us, a low volume custom builder, based on recommendations by friends.
Hwang and Chan flipped the floor plan around on the second floor, reducing the bedrooms from four to three and the bathrooms from three to two.
“We have the bonus room and tech area at the back of the house instead of the front and we made the kids’ (ages three and five) bathroom larger,” says Hwang.
The powder room on the main floor is now a full bathroom with a shower. The couple increased storage space in the mudroom on the main floor, making it more of a walk-in closet.
“With kids you have lots of junk,” Hwang says.
She’s excited about her new kitchen with a waterfall island and plenty of space to entertain. Chan worked with Homes by Us to create a spectacular media room complete with multiple speakers and a projector screen.
“I’m looking forward to watching hockey,” he professes, admitting to being an Oilers fan who appreciates all Canadian teams.
The home was designed with their young family in mind, with plenty of space for quality time at home.
The community of Aspen, the only community they felt was comparable to their former haunt in Edmonton’s Magrath Heights neighbourhood, was well worth waiting for.
“We were looking for a nice neighbourhood feel with bigger lots, walking trails and more nature around. Something close to amenities, so with Aspen Landing right there, everything was around the corner. We wanted a good school district and in Aspen, there are lots of top schools close by. We just had to wait for the developer to release the lots,” says Hwang.
Chan says the drive downtown will be easier and that the train is an option, with an LRT station down the road at 69th Street S.W.
Aspen is in a beautiful location; not quite the ravine-filled oasis of southwest Edmonton, but Hwang says, there’s an appropriate trade off.
“You don’t see the mountains in Edmonton. We see the mountains here,” she says with a smile.
Homes by Us is a family owned company that’s been active in Calgary for 30 years. It was one of the first builders in Aspen when the southwest community was founded more than a decade ago by the Springbank Land Co. and has built hundreds of custom homes in the community since then.
Project co-ordinator Raphael Jimenez says they have a few projects on the go in this final phase of Aspen, north of 17th Avenue S.W. at Aspen Summit Boulevard S.W., with five lots currently available to prospective buyers.
“We’ve been building in Aspen since 2006. We’re one of the experts in the area,” he says.
Homes in Aspen Woods Estates are in the $1.1 million to $1.6 million price range. The 3,180-square-foot Sequoia starts at $1.14 million.
“This home showcases what a lot of people are looking for. It’s stunning with everything you’d expect in an estate home, but it feels homey — geared for families. It’s nothing you couldn’t live in,” Jimenez explains. “It captures everyone’s imagination.”
